Bilingual Education Mentoring Through Partnerships

TITLE VII
Goal: To increase the number of fully-prepared bilingual teachers
Requirements:
Minimum GPA 2.5
Junior Classification
As full-time students, each semester trainee will complete 20 hours of field experience in a bilingual classroom working with a certified bilingual education teacher, attend cultural events, present language seminars, and attend professional meetings
Tuition, fees, and book allowance is given to each student along with a $175 stipend when requirements are fulfilled.
2002-2003 marked the 5th year of the grants (BEMPA and ESCALA)

Career Ladder for Paraprofessionals

TITLE VII
Goal: To increase the number of fully prepared bilingual teachers in collaboration with partnership school districts
Objectives:
Districts will support students through spirit of "grow your own"
UTSA downtown campus will be the support structure for grant trainees
Requirements:
Maintain a GPA of 2.5
Carry 12 semester credit hours each semester
Attend cultural events and professional meetings
Present and attend language seminars
Junior classification
Tuition, fees, and a book allowance is given to each student along with a $300 stipend when requirements are fulfilled.

Leaders in Bilingual Reading Opportunities

Goal: To increase the number of fully prepared bilingual teachers with an emphasis in Reading

Objectives:
Assist master teachers nominated from collaborating school districts to achieve their goal to acquire a Master’s Degree in bilingual education with a certification as Reading Specialist.
Assist master teachers nominated from collaborating school districts who already have a Master’s Degree in bilingual education to obtain certification as a Reading Specialist.
Assist undergraduate students to obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in IDS as Bilingual Education Generalist with a focus on reading instruction.

Requirements:
Complete program during a 24-month period.
Complete 20 hours of field experience in a bilingual/ESL classroom.
Attend cultural events and professional meetings.
Mentor paraprofessionals and undergraduates pursuing a specialization in Bilingual Education.
Present and attend professional conferences in bilingual education.
The award includes the payment of tuition, fees, and a book allowance.

Tapping Resources to Activate Instructional Innovation

Goal: To increase the number of fully prepared bilingual teachers and English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers in the San Antonio Area through the collaboration of UTSA and local school districts

Objectives:
Prepare a group of undergraduates and “normalistas” to become bilingual teachers
Increase the number of secondary content areas teachers with English as a Second Language Supplemental certification working in middle school or high school classrooms with English Language Learners.
Prepare individuals holding a B.A. degrees as elementary bilingual or all level ESL teachers through a Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program.

Requirements:
Complete program in a 24-month period.

Present and attend language seminars.
