The Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies has received nearly $700,000 from the estate of Dr. Arcadia Lopez.
Dr. Arcadia Lopez passed away in January of 2007 at the age of 97. Her donation to BBL will be used to fund scholarships for students pursuing a degree in bilingual education. Born in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nueveo Leon, Mexico, Dr. Lopez came to San Antonio at a very young age. Dr. Lopez overcame the turmoil and dislocation of revolution and immigration, as well as the hardship of growing up in a poor family during the Great Depression. She graduated from our Lady of the Lake University with her Bachelor's degree in mathematics and education and went on to earn a master's degree in education from the University of Texas at Austin and a doctorate from Nova University in Florida.
