The Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies invites you to apply to its Plan I or Plan II Ph.D. program in Culture, Literacy, and Language (CLL). Plan I is for students who take a full time credit hour load of 9 units in Fall and 9 units in Spring semesters. Plan II is for students who take classes in the evening and weekends at a rate of 6 hours in the Fall, 6 hours in the Spring and 6 hours in the Summer semesters. The expectation is that all doctoral students complete 18 semester hours annually.
Plan I students will typically compete for fellowships with Teaching Assistantship/Research Assistantship (TA/RA) responsibilities. Plan II students do not compete for fellowships until the 4th year of dissertation study. The expectation is that all students (Plan I and Plan II) work toward completing Qualifying Exams during their third year in the CLL program and complete dissertation in their 4th or 5th year.
This is the first year (2006-2007) where a small qualified group of applicants will be selected for a pilot Plan II plan of study. This pilot program is responsive to requests received by the Division of Bicultural and Bilingual studies from career professionals who desire to complete Ph.D. requirements while still maintaining their regular job responsibilities.
